Koorda is a small town located in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. It was founded in the early 1900s as a result of the gold rush in the area. The town’s name comes from the local Aboriginal word “Gwoorndooloo” which means “place of fire”.

Prior to European settlement, the area was inhabited by the Njaki Njaki people who were known for their hunting and gathering skills. However, their population declined sharply after the arrival of Europeans, who brought diseases and destroyed their traditional way of life.

The first European explorers to the area were John Septimus Roe and his team in 1836. They were followed by pastoralists who settled in the area and established sheep stations. The land was also used for agriculture, particularly wheat farming, which remains a major industry in the region to this day.

The discovery of gold at Mount Burdett in 1897 led to a rush of miners to the area. The town of Koorda was established in 1913 as a service centre for the mining industry. However, the gold rush was short-lived and by the 1920s, the mining industry had declined. The town then turned to agriculture as its main source of income.

During World War II, Koorda was used as a training ground for Australian soldiers. The town also played a role in the war effort by providing food and supplies to troops stationed in the area. After the war, Koorda continued to grow and develop as a farming community.

In the 1960s, the town’s population peaked at around 500 people. However, the population has since declined and today, Koorda has a population of just over 200 people.

Despite its small size, Koorda has a rich history and a strong sense of community. The town has a number of historic buildings, including the Koorda Hotel which was built in 1916 and is still in operation today. The town’s main street is also lined with historic buildings that date back to the early 1900s.

Koorda is located in a beautiful part of Western Australia, surrounded by rolling hills and wheat fields. It is a popular destination for tourists who want to experience the natural beauty of the Wheatbelt region. Visitors can explore the town’s rich history, enjoy nature walks, and sample local produce at the farmer’s market.

In conclusion, Koorda has a fascinating history that reflects the changing fortunes of Western Australia over the past century. From its origins as a gold mining town to its current status as a farming community, the town has survived and thrived thanks to the resilience and determination of its residents.
